Gel Coat Shower Repair Video – Air Void

Best Bath Systems has produced a series of videos on how to perform common gel coat repairs on our line of shower and tub wall units. Each video provides a list of materials and step-by-step instructions to fix conditions such as thin paint, air voids, and small cracks. Gel Coat Repair Instructional Video
Condition: AIR VOID
Items Needed: router, buffer, buffing compound , putty knife or popsicle stick Dixie cup or container to mix in sandpaper (180 grit, 320 grit, 600, 1200), clean water and rags Duraglass (mixture of gel paste and cream hardener) Gel Coat Patch (mixture of paint, catalyst, fiberglass powder)
Best Bath Gel Coat spray paint masking tape, acetone
1. Clean out area with router
2. Mix Duraglass
Mix well
3. Fill void with Duraglass
By using a putty knife or popsicle stick
Allow to dry 2-3 minutes
4. Trim off excess Duraglass
5. Sand area with dry 180 sandpaper to smooth filled area
6. Wipe area with acetone Tape off area to protect from overspray
7. Mix Gel Coat Patch
Mix well
8. Apply Gel Coat Patch to eliminate cracking
9. Spray paint area right away to match using Best Bath Gel Coat spray paint Let dry 30 minutes
10. Wipe area with acetone
11. Sand area with 320 sandpaper to smooth filled area – use your hand to feel the area to ensure area is smooth
12. Wipe area clean with dry rag
13. Sand area with wet 600 sandpaper to remove scratches
14. Wipe area clean with dry rag
15. Sand area with wet 1200 sandpaper
16. Apply buffer compound to buffer and buff to shine
17. Wipe area clean

Gel Coat Repair Instructional Video
Condition: FLANGE REPAIR
Items Needed: router, roller, grinder, putty knife or popsicle stick, Dixie cup or container to mix in, sandpaper (80 grit sandpaper block), Resin Patch (mixture of fiberglass mat, resin, catalyst) Duraglass (mixture of gel paste and cream hardener) Gel Coat Patch (mixture of paint, catalyst, fiberglass powder) Best Bath Gel Coat spray paint, acetone, masking tape
1. Make Resin Patch
Mix resin and catalyst well until turns a smooth brown color
Apply to fiberglass mat until soaked completely Resin Patch
2. Apply tape to cover top and bottom of damaged flange and extend out to match existing flange
3. Flip wall panel to expose backside of wall
4. Apply Resin Patch over taped area
use roller to smooth patch
Soak roller immediately in acetone to clean off drying resin
5. Allow patch to dry completely 30-40 minutes
6. Grind edge of patch to match existing flange
7. Turn unit over to expose right side
8. Router edges to smooth repaired area, no loose flakes
9. Wipe area with acetone
10. Tape off area to protect from overspray
11. Mix Duraglass
Mix well
12. Fill void with Duraglass
By using a putty knife or popsicle stick
Allow to dry 2-3 minutes
13. Sand area with dry 80 sandpaper/block
14. Wipe area with acetone and tape off area to protect from overspray
15. Mixture Gel Coat Patch
Mix well
16. Apply Gel Coat Patch with fingers to area
17. Right away spray paint area to match using Best Bath Gel Coat spray paint Let dry 30 minutes
18. Area does not need to be buffed since this will be covered with trim

Items Needed: router, buffer, buffing compound , putty knife or popsicle stick Dixie cup or container to mix in, sandpaper (80 grit sandpaper block, 180, 320, 600, 1200), clean water and rags, Duraglass (mixture of gel paste and cream hardener) Gel Coat Patch (mixture of paint, catalyst, fiberglass powder) Best Bath Gel Coat spray paint, acetone, masking tape

2. Sand area with 180 dry sandpaper to smooth edges and receive filler
3. Wipe area with acetone
4. Mix Duraglass
Mix well
5. Fill void with Duraglass
By using a putty knife or popsicle stick
Allow to dry 2-3 minutes
6. Sand area with dry 80 sandpaper block
to smooth filled area continue out a 2-3” radius
beyond repair to blend repair
7. Sand area with dry180 sandpaper to receive patch
8. Wipe area with acetone and tape off area to protect from overspray
9. Mix Gel Coat Patch
Mix well
10. Apply Gel Coat Patch with fingers to area
11. Right away spray paint area to match using Best Bath Gel Coat spray paint Let dry 30 minutes
12. Wipe area with acetone
13. Sand area with dry 320 sandpaper/block to smooth filled area – use your hand to feel the area to ensure area is smooth and wipe off excess dust
